From a farmer to a simple chambermaid, everyone has a story to tell. Like a rags-to-riches tale, these beauty titlists have successfully emerged from nowhere to the center stage, representing the country in international competitions.
Get to know Mike Gerard Mendoza, Mister Philippines 2015 from Sta. Maria, Bulacan. Mike is the newly appointed Mister Philippines 2015 who will represent the country in the upcoming Men Universe Model competition this June 2015 in Dominican Republic.
He started out assisting his grandfather in planting crops until he decided to become a farmer on his own, digging the field and cultivating plants in a one-hectare farm while still pursuing his studies. He lived a simple life. His father often described him as a very timid person, while his mother further noted that he is a very hardworking son who helped his parents with their livelihood during his early life.
He decided to join Mr. Junior when he was in high school, and he developed his self-esteem after he won the pageant. He also became the 2013 Ginoong Bulacan before he went to the national spotlight to represent his hometown in the Mister Universe Philippines 2014.
In last year’s Mister Universe Philippines, he won the Mister Regrow award, which was held at the Resorts World Manila’s Newport Performing Arts theater on January 18, 2014. The major award, however, was bagged by Mark del Rosario from Cavite, while Mike became one of the semi-finalists.
Mike is a hotel and restaurant management graduate who had his on-the-job training in Japan for three months. When he returned to the Philippines, the board of directors for Mister Universe Philippines saw his great improvement and decided to appoint him as this year’s Mister Universe since no pageant can be held for this year.
The turnover ceremony, headed by Gus de Castro, executive committee of the said pageant, was held on February 15, 2015, where Mike was officially named to represent the Philippines for the upcoming Men Universe Model. Gio Cabanlit, another contender from Mister Universe Philippines 2014, was also awarded as Mister Philippines Tourism 2015.
On the other hand, another beauty titlist is out and proud of her roots as a housemaid before she became Binibining Pilipinas International 2015.
Janicel Jaranilla Lubina shared her fairy-tale story as the eldest among the three siblings. She works as a housemaid in Palawan together with her mother who has been doing the job since she was young.
While she was out buying slippers, Rodil Flores, a makeup artist who later became her handler, saw her and her potential to become a beauty queen. Rodil claimed that at that very instant, he saw a diamond and knew he wanted to polish her to become the finest beauty queen. Soon enough, Janicel found herself doing heavy training while joining beauty pageants here and abroad.
Her first exposure to the pageantry world was in 2012 when she joined Mutya ng Palawan, and during this first try, she bagged the ultimate prize.
Her first national competition was Slimmers World Miss Bikini Philippines 2013 where she also won the crown. Outside the country, she competed in Miss Scuba International that took place in Jakarta, Indonesia, and she was the second runner-up.
In 2013, she joined Miss World Philippines 2013 where she became the first runner-up, next to Miss World 2013, Megan Lynne Young. Finally this year, she joined Binibining Pilipinas and took the Miss Philippines International crown. She will represent Philippines in the Miss International 2015, which will be held in Japan this November 5.
