At present, transgenders have managed to create diversity in fashion and modeling industries. Among the few androgynous who were successful in the modeling industry are the world’s first transgender model, Bosnian Andreja Pejic, who made a transition from male modeling to female, and Laverne Cox, the first transgender to appear in the cover of Time magazine in June 2014 and is now in the popular TV series Orange is the New Black.
Today, another transgender creates history especially in the Philippines for being the first transgender model to sweep off the Sacramento Fashion Week runway. Meet Angel Qinan, the first Filipino model and the first transgender model of Apple Modeling Management Agency.
Angel is born as Angel Castillo, a student in an all-boy school in La Salle Green Hills during her high school days. She earned her computer science degree in De La Salle University, and after she graduated, she moved to New York to pursue nursing studies.
During her childhood days, she was drawn to fancy dresses and pretty skirts, but to her frustration, she could not wear them. At seventeen, she expressed her desire to become a woman, but her mother cut loose her ambition, trying to protect her from ridicule and bullying.
In 2013, Angel Castillo decided it would be the right time to make her transition from male to female; thus, she was reborn as Angel Qinan, a registered nurse who signed up as a model for Apple Model Management Agency, which is based in Thailand. The director and founder of the agency, Noam Lev, found a huge potential in Angel to fill the gap in the modeling industry as he continually seeks for emerging trends in the world of modeling.
Standing 5’8″ tall with a slender body and high cheekbones, Angel Qinan made it during the casting call for Maisha Bahati’s fall and winter collection. Designer Bahati claimed that he was drawn into Angel’s exotic look, her graceful walk, and her positive energy, and he thought it is high time to give catwalk a distinction by taking Angel as one of her muses.
Two months ago, February 21, Angel walked in the finale of Sacramento Fashion Week for Maisha Bahati’s fall and winter collection. During the casting call for the said brand, the designer claimed to be drawn into her exotic look and graceful walk and gave diversity in the runway by talking angel as one of her muses.
The opportunity that Maisha Bahati presented to Angel Qinan led Angel to her very first catwalk in the international runway, which was during the Sacramento Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2015 February this year.
It was a long journey for Angel to become who she is now, but it was definitely worth it. To every trangender around the globe, Angel Qinan has a piece of advice: “Love yourself, and things will fall into place in due time.”Transgender Sweeps Off Sacramento Fashion Week Runway by Holly Bissonnette
